iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Flip 8.

Apple's first foldable meets Samsung's eighth foldable. One opens like a book into a mini tablet; the other folds in half into your pocket. Same "foldable" label, completely different phones — here's how to pick the right one for you.

Price (starting) $1,999 Edge: Flip 8 $1,199.99

The Flip 8 starts at $1,199.99 for 256GB ($1,399 for 512GB). The Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB, with 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB configurations each stepping the price up.

That's an $800 gap at the entry level — the single biggest difference on this page. Samsung also routinely discounts and offers up to $600 in trade-in credit; Apple rarely does. The Flip 8 is on sale now at Samsung.com, Amazon, Best Buy, and all three major US carriers; the Duo hits stores October 23.

Main display 7.6″ OLED, 1878×2670 Edge: Duo 6.9″ AMOLED, 1080×2520

The Duo's inner screen is a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR OLED (1878×2670, 430 ppi) with a nano-texture finish that softens the fold crease. The Flip 8's inner screen is a 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X (1080×2520, 400 ppi).

Both hit 120Hz adaptive refresh and 3,000-nit peak brightness. The Duo simply gives you more screen — about 50% more area than an iPhone 18 Pro Max, per Apple — which matters for reading, multitasking, and video.

Cover / outer display 5.4″ OLED, 120Hz Edge: Duo 4.1″ AMOLED, 60–120Hz

The Duo's 5.4-inch outer display (1398×2034) is usable as a full phone on its own — Apple says it covers 90%+ of an iPhone 18 Pro's screen area. The Flip 8's 4.1-inch FlexWindow (948×1048) is a handy second screen for widgets, notifications, and framing selfies, but you'll open the phone for real tasks.

Chip A20 Pro (2nm) Tie Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5

A20 Pro (6-core CPU, 7-core GPU, dual 16-core Neural Engine) versus Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 — or Samsung's Exynos 2600 in select markets. Both are the fastest mobile chips their makers have ever shipped, and both will feel instant for years. No buyer should choose on this row.

Storage options 256GB – 2TB Edge: Duo 256GB / 512GB

The Duo offers 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB — the 2TB option exists for people filming lots of 4K video. The Flip 8 tops out at 512GB (both with 12GB of RAM; Apple doesn't publish RAM figures).

Rear cameras 48MP + 48MP Edge: Duo 50MP + 12MP

Duo: 48MP Fusion Main (f/1.6, OIS) + 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide (f/2.2, macro). Flip 8: 50MP main (f/1.8, OIS) + 12MP ultra-wide (f/2.2).

Main cameras are close enough that software matters more than megapixels. The Duo's edge is the high-resolution ultra-wide — better detail in wide shots and macro. Neither phone has a dedicated telephoto zoom lens.

Selfies 12MP Center Stage Edge: Duo 10MP punch-hole

The Duo has a 12MP Center Stage outer camera plus an under-display FaceTime camera inside. The Flip 8 has a 10MP inner selfie camera — but its party trick is FlipShot: use the cover screen as a viewfinder and take selfies with the far better rear cameras.

Battery 44 hrs video (outer) Edge: Duo* 4,300mAh Si/C

Apple rates the Duo at up to 44 hours of video playback on the outer display (31 hours on the inner display). Samsung quotes a 4,300mAh silicon-carbon battery without a video-playback figure, so the two aren't directly comparable on paper — but Apple's rated number is the stronger claim. *Real-world testing will tell the full story.

Charging Fast wired + MagSafe Edge: Duo 25W wired · 15W wireless

The Flip 8 charges at 25W wired / 15W wireless. The Duo supports fast wired charging plus MagSafe/Qi2 wireless — and it opens up Apple's whole magnetic accessory ecosystem (wallets, chargers, mounts).

Water & dust IP68 Edge: Duo IP48

The Duo's IP68 rating is full flagship-grade dust and water protection. The Flip 8's IP48 handles water well but offers less dust protection — worth knowing if your phone lives at the beach or a job site.

Size & weight 254g · 5.2mm open Edge: Flip 8 180g · 6.1mm open

The Flip 8 is 74 grams lighter (180g vs 254g) — you'll feel that every time you pick it up. The Duo is thinner when open (5.2mm vs 6.1mm) and slimmer folded too (11.3mm vs 13.1mm). Honestly: the Flip disappears into a pocket; the Duo feels like carrying a small luxury notebook.

Software updates iOS 27, Apple track record Edge: Flip 8 7 yrs OS + security

Samsung promises 7 years of OS upgrades and security patches for the Flip 8 — updates until 2033, in writing. Apple doesn't publish a number but has an excellent track record (typically 5–6+ years of iOS updates). The Flip wins on the explicit guarantee, which also helps resale value.

Unlock Touch ID (side button) Tie Fingerprint + face

The Duo skips Face ID for Touch ID in the side button — fast and reliable, especially with the phone half-open. The Flip 8 offers fingerprint and face unlock. Different, both fine.

Fold style Book-style (opens to tablet) Different, not better Clamshell (folds to pocket square)

This is the real decision. The Duo is a mini-tablet that folds down to a usable phone. The Flip 8 is a normal phone that folds in half to vanish into small pockets. Neither is "better" — they solve different problems, which is exactly what the quiz below sorts out.

Which foldable fits you?

Five quick questions, thirty seconds. Answer honestly — the quiz is blunt on purpose.

The honest verdict

No review-unit diplomacy. Here's who should buy which — and who should buy neither.

Buy the iPhone Duo if…

  • You live in Apple's world — iPhone, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods.
  • You want a tablet in your pocket: reading, multitasking, editing, big-screen video.
  • $1,999 doesn't sting, or you're expensing it.
  • You're comfortable being an early adopter — it's Apple's first foldable, and first-gens carry some unknowns.

Buy the Galaxy Z Flip 8 if…

  • You want a normal phone that folds in half — one-hand texting, tiny pockets, 180 grams.
  • $800 matters to you. (It should — that's real money.)
  • You're in the Android/Windows world, or happy to switch.
  • You like a proven hinge: Samsung is on its eighth flip.

Buy neither if…

  • You just want the best camera — a slab flagship like the iPhone 18 Pro or Galaxy S26 Ultra still wins on zoom.
  • You're rough on phones. Hinges are tougher than ever, but they're still moving parts.
  • The price makes you wince — excellent $800 phones exist, and nobody ever regretted saving $1,200.

Questions people actually ask

The stuff that comes up every time foldables come up at dinner.

Is the iPhone Duo Apple's first foldable phone?

Yes. Apple announced it on September 9, 2026, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro. Pre-orders opened October 16, and it hits stores October 23, 2026 starting at $1,999 — about seven years after Samsung's first folding phone.

Which is cheaper?

The Galaxy Z Flip 8, by $800: $1,199.99 vs $1,999 for 256GB. Samsung also discounts aggressively and offers generous trade-in credit; Apple rarely does either.

Do they fold the same way?

No — and this is the whole decision. The Duo opens like a book into a 7.6-inch tablet display. The Flip 8 folds in half like a clamshell into a pocketable square, opening to a regular 6.9-inch phone. Mini-tablet vs tiny phone.

Does the iPhone Duo have Face ID?

No. Apple went with Touch ID in the side button instead — a deliberate choice that works well when the phone is half-open on a table.

Which has better battery life?

On paper, the Duo: Apple rates it at up to 44 hours of video playback on the outer display (31 on the inner). Samsung quotes a 4,300mAh battery with no video-playback figure, so you can't compare them directly until real-world tests land.

Can you use them one-handed?

The Flip 8 is the one-hand pick — 180g and a normal phone shape when open. The Duo's 5.4-inch outer display works one-handed, but the big inner screen really wants two hands (and a table, honestly).
