Quick Resume is one of the best things about the Xbox Series X|S: you leave a game, come back days later, and you are right where you left off. But that saved snapshot can be a problem for games that live online. After a long break, a resumed game may have to reconnect, re-sign in, or shake off a stale session — and sometimes it just keeps struggling to get back online.
Microsoft added a quieter fix for exactly that: you can now switch Quick Resume off for a single game. That game starts fresh on every launch, while the rest of your library keeps the instant-resume magic.
Turn it off for one game
- Update your console first. This per-game option needs current Xbox system software, so check for a console update if you do not see it.
- Find the game that keeps reconnecting. Open its tile — either in the Quick Resume group or anywhere in your library.
- Open More options on that tile and choose Manage Quick Resume — or go to the tile and choose Manage game and add-ons > Quick Resume settings.
- Disable Quick Resume for that game. From now on it launches fresh instead of resuming from a saved snapshot.
- Leave your other games alone. Single-player and offline games can keep Quick Resume on — there is no need to turn the feature off everywhere.
The fix is not turning Quick Resume off — it is turning it off only for the game that hates resuming.
Why a fresh start helps
An online game is holding a conversation with a server. When Quick Resume freezes that conversation for hours or days and then wakes it back up, the other end has often moved on. A fresh launch starts a clean connection instead of trying to revive an old one, which is why this is worth trying first for reconnect loops in online-heavy titles.
Good to know
- It is per game, not all or nothing — change only the titles giving you trouble, and change them back the same way if you miss resuming.
- It is a setting to try, not a guarantee — if a game still will not connect on a fresh launch, the problem is likely the network or the game servers, not Quick Resume.
- No extra cost — this is a built-in console setting on Xbox Series X|S; no subscription is needed to use it.
That is the whole trick: keep the speed of Quick Resume where it works, and give the one stubborn online game a clean start every time.
