Some upgrades you pay for. This one just shows up. Sony has brought Quick Spectral Super Resolution — QSSR for short — to the base PS5. It's AI upscaling: the console renders the game smartly behind the scenes, then uses AI to reconstruct a crisper image on your TV. The practical result is more fine detail and a more stable picture, on the hardware you already own.

How to turn it on

  1. Update the game. QSSR arrives through game patches, so make sure supported titles are fully updated first.
  2. Open the game's graphics settings. Inside the display or graphics menu, look for a QSSR option alongside the usual performance and quality modes.
  3. Select it and play. That's it — the upscaling happens automatically while you play. If the game offers more than one graphics mode, try QSSR and compare; picking your favorite takes about a minute.

Which games have it so far

The first titles to ship QSSR graphics options via patch are Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Both are good showcases: detailed worlds where extra sharpness and stability are easy to spot — foliage, armor, distant scenery. And because Sony has opened the door to every developer, more games can add QSSR support going forward. Expect the list to grow patch by patch.

What to expect

Early impressions point to notable gains in fine detail and image stability — the two things that make a game look "clean" rather than just high-resolution. Thin lines shimmer less, textures hold together better in motion, and busy scenes stay composed. It's not a new console's worth of power, and it won't transform every game overnight. But for a free update to hardware already under your TV, it's a genuinely meaningful step up.

Who should try it

Every base PS5 owner, honestly — it costs nothing and takes two minutes. It's the biggest win if you play on a 4K TV, love visually detailed games, or have been eyeing newer hardware and want to see how far your current console can go first. Fire up Wolverine or Ghost of Yōtei after their latest patches and flip the setting on.

Free performance is the best kind of performance. Go get yours.
