For years, "Hey Google" meant Google Assistant: set a timer, send a text, get the weather. That era is winding down. Google is moving its devices to Gemini, the newer AI assistant, and the change is now reaching the point of no return — the setting that let you switch back to Assistant is going away. If your phone feels a little different lately, that's why.
What's changing
- Phones go first. Gemini becomes the assistant on your phone, and the switch-back option disappears from the Gemini app.
- Your other gear follows. Watches, earbuds, and cars are moving to Gemini too, so the voice you talk to is the same everywhere you go.
- Home speakers get a pass — for now. Speakers and smart displays keep Assistant, so the kitchen routine you set up years ago keeps working as-is.
What Gemini does differently
Assistant was built around matching your command to a known answer. Gemini is built around conversation. That means longer, more natural back-and-forth: you can ask a follow-up without starting over, talk through a problem out loud, or ask it to make sense of something long — a rambling idea, a messy plan, a "what should I do about this?" question. The everyday stuff Assistant handled doesn't vanish; it's just being answered by a system that's better at context and worse at nothing in particular. Give it the questions you'd have typed into a search box and see how it handles them.
If you liked Assistant the way it was
Fair. If your whole relationship with your phone was "timer, 10 minutes" and "call Mom," the change can feel like being handed a sports car when you needed a bicycle. A few things help: keep your asks simple and specific at first, check that your routines and alarms made the trip over, and spend one evening re-teaching Gemini the basics — your places, your people, your preferences. Most of the friction people hit is setup friction, not capability. And if a command that used to work stops working, saying it a slightly different way usually fixes it.
The bottom line
This isn't a downgrade or a new app to learn from scratch — it's the same "Hey Google," with a much better brain behind it. The switch is happening whether we tap anything or not, so the winning move is to spend ten minutes getting Gemini set up your way. Your future self, asking it to plan a trip while driving, will be glad you did.
